The UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR) conducted a workshop at the University of the Philippines – Open University, together with the UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS). The workshop focused on creating massive, open, online courses (MOOCs) about the science of climate change, minimizing carbon footprint, and involving the course takers in tree planting activities as part of CFNR’s A Thousand Forests Program.
In her opening discussion, UPOU-FMDS Dean Dr. Joanne V. Serrano introduced Resource-Based Learning as an educational model where students are encouraged and enabled to use various resources in seeking information and problem-solving. Maximizing learning assets such as print and non-print modules and digital learning resources like images, videos, and audio were also discussed.
Meanwhile, CFNR Dean Marlo D. Mendoza explained that the online course will include sustainable tree-planting, global response to climate change, and estimating individual carbon footprint. During the workshop, UPOU and CFNR discussed the specific topics about climate change that will be covered in the course modules to facilitate the development of horizontal plans or matrices as the basis of the MOOCs.
